Whenever people think about John Goodman, they conjure up images of a big and burly guy in the movies. Known for his affable personality on-screen, John Goodman got sick and tired of his oversized physique. We will leave his methods of losing weight later in this post. Let’s focus on his weight change over the years.

 

John Goodman Was Not Always Overweight

Believe it or not, John Goodman played football during his high school days. In fact, he was so good at it that he attained a football scholarship to Missouri State University! John Goodman Got Bigger in Big River

John Goodman ventured out of Missouri in search for more acting opportunities. He went to New York City in 1975. However, it took him a decade to get the role of Pap Finn In Big River. True Story That John Goodman Grew Heavier

A year later in 1986, John Goodman starred in the film True Stories. His 6-foot-3 frame took centrestage in that movie. Below is a screenshot taken from the movie. You can see that John Goodman still had a pretty healthy waistline then:

John Goodman’s Weight Raised With his Raised Stardom

In 1987, John Goodman starred in the American crime comedy movie Raising Arizona. He starred alongside Nicolas Cage. Playing his role as Gale Snoats, John Goodman appeared to have gained many pounds. John Goodman’s weight gain did not stop there. His weight went from heavy to very heavy in the coming years. By 1991, his heavy frame is synonymous with his name. John Goodman’s Big Frame Made Him A Natural As Fred Flintstone

John Goodman’s reputation as a big man led him to the role of Fred Flintstone in 1994. His height, built and sense of humour made him a natural choice for Yabba-Dabba-Doo. It was a huge box office success. And it was apparent that John Goodman’s “strong” built contributed to the authenticity of the movie. Here is a few shots of John Goodman in the movie:

John Goodman in The Big Lebowski  – Still Gaining Weight

Who do you look for if you want to cast a greedy ransom collector? Look no further, John Goodman with his big frame and huge presence was the ideal candidate. In 1998, he was cast as Walter Sobchak, who tried to keep ransom money in the movie, The Big Lebowski. Here he is holding a bowling ball in The Big Lebowski:

John Goodman Weight Issues Continue in Year 2000

John Goodman’s weight continued to rise. In the movie “O Brother Where Art Thou”, he played the role of Daniel “Big Dan” Teague, a one-eyed man who masquerades as a bible salesman. Check out this shot from the movie. His pants looked stretched to the max! Would you agree he did not really care about his weight?

In 2002, John Goodman played a role in the Australia Film, Dirty Deeds. He looked every bit his role with a moustache and sleek suit. His broad shoulders made him look really intimidating. Check out the photo below:

John Goodman’s Weight was Beyond Hope in Beyond The Sea

His weight did not improve two years later. In 2004, John Goodman starred in the box office flop Beyond the Sea. Despite having a $25 million budget, the film only made $8.4 million at the box office. John Goodman’s weight did not take a plunge though.

A Heavy Smoking John Goodman

In 2008, John Goodman was spotted smoking during the premiere of Speed Racer. You could see that his belly was weighing heavy on his belt. It was a challenge to see his belt buckle.

John Goodman was seen attending the 16th Annual Hollywood Film Awards Gala presented by The Los Angeles Times held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on October 22, 2012 in Beverly Hills, California. He was dressed in a smart tie and fitting jacket. Still, his ambitions to lose weight were not evident:

In 2013, John Goodman was spotted in a random shot at LAX International Airport in Los Angeles. The buttons on his shirt were almost at breaking point! Check him out below:

In 2014, John Goodman attended the Monument Men Premiere at Ziegfeld Theatre. Dressed in a smart looking full body suit, he looked vibrant alongside George Clooney. His weight loss plan has not kicked in though:

John Goodman Weight Loss Started in 2015

Then, in 2015, John Goodman surprised everyone! He turned up at the “Trumbo” premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival at the Elgin looking a WHOLE LOT THINNER. Gone were his big belly and wide waistline. He looked trim and fit. It was an incredible feat that spawned many interviews about his weight.

John Goodman Revealed His Weight Loss Secrets and Motivation

In an interview with the New York Post, his personal trainer, Mackie Shilstone, shared that John Goodman shed around 100 pounds. He said “ This didn’t happen overnight – it’s been an ongoing process.”

Shilstone took Goodman even further when he introduced him to a “Mediterranean-style eating plan” — one that leans heavily toward fish, nuts, olive oil, vegetables and fruit. Goodman also exercised six days a week, making sure to take 10,000 to 12,000 steps a day. An elliptical bicycle and treadmill played a big part in whittling the pounds. 

Shilstone shared “There needs to be strategic planning. This time, he really wanted to do it.”

John Goodman admitted ‘I know it sounds sappy, but it was a waste. It takes a lot of creative energy to sit on your ass and figure out what you’re going to eat next … I wanted to live life better.’

To prove that his weight loss was not “a flash in the pan” event, Goodman kept his weight off.

In his latest appearances in 2017, he looked fit and healthy in a much smaller frame. Here, you can see him posing with his caricature at the Sardi’s Caricatures Unveiling at Sardi’s in New York City:
